General Hunting Information in Virginia
Hunting on the IWLA - Alexandria Chapter requires an additional permission slip from the Chapter. The permission slip can be obtained by complete the hunting quiz below. For those NOT Hunting you should be aware that there may be hunters out in the woods. If you desire to take a hike on the trails during hunting season, please check with the Caretaker to see if any hunters are hunting. ALL HUNTERS are REQUIRED to park in the parking lot and check in at the kiosk in front of the caretaker's house, place a pin showing where you will be and raise the flag. make sure to lower the flag and sign out before leaving.
Hunter Education: TThe DWR held a very successful tree stand safety workshop on July 25th. The participants learned, through some hands-on activities, how to safely use a ladder stand, climbing stand, hang-on stand, and a tree saddle as well as picking up some helpful tips and tricks along the way.
DWR is currently running a "How To Become A Virginia Deer Hunter" on-line series on Wednesday's from 7-8pm. A different how to deer hunt in Virginia topic is presented each week. While this is a series, participants can pick and choose classes that fit their need/interest and are not required to attend every on-line session. On October 10th, DWR will be offering a Virginia Outdoor Women's (VOW) Basic Hunter Education Course that is free to the public. This course is geared toward women and girls ages 11 years old and up. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by Ixodes ticks, also known as deer ticks or blacklegged ticks. Lyme disease affects people of all ages. The CDC notes that it is most common in children, older adults, and others such as firefighters and park rangers who work outside and have higher exposure to ticks. Be Tick Aware Wear Tick Repellent: Repellents with DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil are the most effective. Create a Tick-Safe Zone at Home: Prune trees, clear leaves and brush, keep deer and other wild animals out of your yard.
